Your Guide to a Rapid, Successful Recovery

The success of any surgical procedure relies heavily on how your body heals in the days following treatment. While our expert dentists perform your surgery with the highest standard of precision, proper home management protects the surgical area, minimizes common side effects, and accelerates your overall healing timeline.

To ensure a smooth recovery after your procedure, keep these foundational rules in mind:

  • Protect the Blood Clot: If you have undergone a tooth extraction, a healthy blood clot must form in the empty socket to protect the exposed bone and nerves. Avoid using drinking straws, smoking, spitting forcefully, or rinsing aggressively for the first 24 to 48 hours, as the negative pressure can dislodge the clot.
  • Manage Swelling with Cold Compresses: Minor swelling or bruising is a completely natural immune response to surgery. To minimize this, wrap an ice pack in a clean cloth and apply it to the outside of your face near the surgical site for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, during the first 24 hours.

Stick to Soft, Nutritious Foods: Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or heavily seeded foods that could irritate or become trapped in the healing surgical sites. Opt instead for nutrient-dense, soft choices such as chilled soups, smooth yogurts, mashed potatoes, and protein shakes.

Dental FAQs: Our FAQ section answers your questions about Oral Surgery

Oral surgery refers to any surgical procedure performed on your teeth, gums, jaws, or other oral structures. This can include extractions, implants, gum grafts, and jaw surgeries. Oral surgery is usually performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a periodontist, who are dental specialists with advanced training in these procedures.

Not necessarily. The vast majority of standard oral surgery procedures—such as routine or surgical tooth extractions and dental implant placements—are performed safely and comfortably utilizing highly effective local anesthesia. This means you will remain completely awake, alert, and capable of communication, but you will not feel any pain or discomfort at the surgical site.

After oral surgery, it's important to eat soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow. This helps to prevent irritation and promote healing. Some good options include:

  • Liquids: Water, broth, smoothies, milkshakes, protein shakes, juice
  • Soft foods: Applesauce, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, cooked pasta, rice, soft fruits like bananas and berries

The duration of a soft food diet after oral surgery varies depending on the type of surgery and your individual healing process. Generally, you'll need to stick to soft foods for about 7 to 10 days after surgery. Your dentist will provide specific instructions tailored to your case.

Gums typically take about 1 to 2 weeks to heal after oral surgery. However, it's crucial to follow your dentist's advice regarding post-operative care to prevent complications and promote healing. This includes avoiding certain foods and activities that could hinder the healing process.
